About 10 years ago, I was President of the Mills Home Baptist Orphanage Alumni Association located in Thomasville, NC. The big event is the annual Homecoming weekend. The Alumni Committee wanted the event to be exciting and enjoyable, not only for the alumni, but also for the children who were in care of Mills Home. We wanted it to be a “magical” experience for all. And with that thought, the idea of a Real Magic Show became the focus for the entertainment for the Saturday night event, along with banana-splits for all. I immediately thought of the best magician I knew, Doug Jones. Problem was we were on the east coast and he was all the way across the United States in California. There were no funds budgeted for entertainment, much less for travel expenses. I called Doug anyway. I explained to him that we would be thrilled if he could make some magic happen and be our Magician entertainment, telling him the date, time and place. I just about dropped the phone as my mouth dropped open in surprise, when he replied “yes!” He stated that he could and furthermore, it would make him happy to do it! Doug Jones graciously and generously provided magic in our hearts and minds and was an inspiration to all of us, young and old. It was a magical evening to be remembered.
